so i sent a few words in when someone requested imput on urban exploration, and i randomly found the online publication today.

“Urban exploration for me is about finding hidden treasures in places most people don’t care to go,” said Jennifer Shumate of Florida. “When I visit a site, I’m not there to graffiti the walls or to smash chairs. I am interested in the history of the building, its architectural styles; who lived there and why did they leave?” Shumate said photography is one of her main purposes for exploring. She is interested in capturing images of objects that have been left behind as well as different types of urban decay. Many explorers appreciate the thrill of discovering an area that few have seen. "There is a definite mindset in urban exploration of finding an area that is in some way secret,” said Janine D’Agati of Maryland. “The explorer feels as if they are becoming part of something esoteric and therefore the act of exploring has a distinct level of intimacy about it.”

At the same time there are some areas in plain sight that the general population will never experience from the same viewpoint that an urban explorer does. “I’m a huge fan of perspectives,” said Chris Brennan of San Francisco who runs the Institute for Urban Exploration’s web site. “For instance, a person could ride the same subway train to work for many years and feel like they know that specific route like the back of their hand, but if they were to have the experience of being in the tunnel rather than in the train, their whole perspective on that environment would be different. “There are infinite adaptations of that idea in everyday life and that’s the stuff that interests me,” he said.

The nub of the gist is to come dressed as Two Things at Once.

There will be drinking, musics, and dancing, and possibly more drinking and dancing.
Car pooling is appreciated (parking is finite) and so is bringing a designated driver.

i watched this wonderful movie called grey gardens that was filmed 30 years ago about two old women, a mother and daughter that live in a dilapidated house. its a beautiful movie, compositionally, though a sad portrait. so a day later, im putting old mp3's back onto my harddrive and listen to rufus wainwright, which i havent heard in a while, and a song called grey gardens comes on and i heard the daughter from the film sampled into the intro.... anyhow, the film is alot like something harmony corrine would have made, but its a documentary, they arent actors. i really wanted to photograph these women but its 30 years later, and they both have passed away, the daughter only in 2002 and she moved to florida. i wish i had seen it sooner.





Film Synopsis…
GREY GARDENS is the unbelievable but true story of Mrs. Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edie, the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Mother and daughter live in a world of their own behind the towering privets that surround their decaying 28-room East Hampton mansion known as "Grey Gardens," a place so far gone that the local authorities once threatened to evict them for violating building and sanitation codes. The incident made national headlines -- American royalty, living in squalor! For the Beales were nothing short of the upper crust. Mrs. Beale, a.k.a. "Big Edie," was a born aristocrat, sister of "Black Jack" Bouvier, Jackie O's father. "Little Edie" was an aspiring actress of striking beauty who put her New York life on hold to care for her mother - and never left her side again. Together they descended into a strange life of dependence and eccentricity that no one had ever shared until the Maysles arrived with their camera and tape recorder.

The Beales were ready for their close-ups. Little Edie -- a still-attractive woman at 56 -- parades about coquettishly in her trademark improvised turbans (her wildly original ensembles inspired a 9-page fashion spread in a 1998 issue of Harper's Bazaar and a 1999 issue of Italian Vogue), reminisces about her brilliant past, still hoping that her Big Chance and Big Romance are just around the corner. Big Edie, trained soprano in her bohemian days, trills romantic songs of yesteryear in a slightly wobbly, but still rich voice. The women bicker, prattle, and flirt like characters out of Tennessee Williams or Eugene O'Neill. The film is a bittersweet love story, a record of the powerful and complex relationship between mother and daughter.
